On September 27, AREPO organised an online presentation of the FAO guide \u201cEvaluating geographical indications \u2013 Guide to tailor evaluations for the development and improvement of geographical indications<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At EU\nlevel, the \u201cFarm to Fork\u201d (F2F) strategy is promoting more equitable, democratic\nand sustainable agricultural and food systems, capable of tackling climate\nchange and contributing to the preservation of the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nthis context, EU quality policy already contributes to\nseveral fundamental objectives of F2F strategy. Furthermore, Geographical\nIndications (GIs) protection is often associated with the production of public\ngoods, such as conservation of biodiversity<\/strong>,\ncontribution to animal welfare<\/strong>,\nprotection of cultural heritage<\/strong>,\nsocio-cultural and rural development<\/strong>\nand reduction of poverty, in particular in mountainous and remote regions,\nwhere the farming sector accounts for a significant part of the economy and\nproduction costs are high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless,\nGIs potential in delivering public goods can be enhanced and the current revision of the EU GIs system<\/a> intends precisely to strengthen\nGIs contribution to sustainability allowing producers to agree on\nsustainability undertakings to be included in their product specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From\nthis perspective, the FAO Guide is a strategic tool for GIs producer\nassociations wanting to commit to improve the sustainability of their\nproductions. Moreover, it represents a very useful instrument for regional\nauthorities that could support producers in the evaluation process. This is\nparticularly relevant for AREPO member regions who share a vision of GIs as\ntools for rural development and territorial planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nguide defines the steps for both a prospective\nand retrospective evaluation,<\/strong> allowing GI producers and other stakeholders\nto identify and assess <\/strong>the main\neconomic, social and environmental effects resulting from GI initiatives and\nthen take decisions <\/strong>on the best way\nto create a new GI or adapt an existing one, with respect to the identified\nobjectives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emilie Vandecandelaere, Food system economist\nat the FAO<\/strong>, explained\nin her presentation<\/a> how evaluation can ensure a more\nsustainable GI system, helping producers in establishing product specifications\nin line with their objectives as well as in adapting these rules to systemic\nsocio-economic and environmental changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nauthors of the guide, Professors Andrea\nMarescotti and Giovanni Belletti from the University of Florence (UNIFI)<\/strong>, went\ndeeper into details focusing their presentation<\/a> on the objectives, method and\napplications of their work.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GIs initiatives are rooted in the territory\nand linked to local natural resources<\/strong> and public goods. In light of this\nspecificity and complexity, the guide has been conceived as a practical<\/strong> and flexible instrument<\/strong> capable to take into account the multiplicity\nof GIs effects on enterprises, on the production system and on the territory.\nIt promotes a case-by-case approach, tailored to the specific needs of each GI\nproduct, as well as to the specific objectives of each producer group. It also\nadopts an inclusive and<\/strong> participatory approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a\nmatter of fact, inclusion, representativeness\nand empowerment of local stakeholders<\/strong> are the first guiding principle of\nthe evaluation process proposed in this FAO-UNIFI work. Secondly, the guide\npromotes a fair <\/strong>evaluation, focused\non the distribution of the effects among the different actors of GI\ninitiatives. The third guiding principle is sustainability<\/strong> assessed as the ability of the GI initiative to\nreproduce the \u201corigin-linked quality virtuous circle<\/a>\u201d and generating economic, social\nand environmental benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the guide was praised and welcomed by AREPO members and other participants who agreed on the importance to develop a culture of evaluation <\/strong>in GI producer groups as well as in public bodies supporting producers in GI registration and amendment procedure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics discussed during the presentation of the guide are relevant to the research carried out within MOVING<\/a> project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
